5 Minutes Keigo Day 2 - Sonkeigo: Respecful Language Part II

🎯 Goal: Today you’ll learn how to form respectful expressions for someone else’s actions when no special Keigo verb exists.

🧠 The standard method

We start with regular verbs. Take the masu‑stem of the verb, add the honorific prefix , and attach になる or になります. The pattern is:

お + [masu‑stem] + になる
お + [masu‑stem] + になります

Examples:

Plain Style masu‑Form Sonkeigo Meaning
よむ よみます およみになります to read 📖
つかう つかいます おつかいになります to use 🛠️
うたう うたいます おうたいになります to sing 🎤
およぐ およぎます おおよぎになります to swim 🏊‍♂️

Let’s look at a few examples in context:

📖 Reading – よむ

  • ✅ わたしは ほんを よみます。 → I read a book.
  • 👨‍🏫 せんせいは ほんを およみになります。 → The honored teacher reads a book.

🎤 Singing – うたう

  • ✅ わたしは うたを うたいます。 → I sing a song.
  • 👨‍🏫 せんせいは おうたを おうたいになります。 → The honored teacher sings a song.

But be careful:

🚶 Going – いく

  • ✅ わたしは がっこうへ いきます。 → I go to school.
  • 👨‍🏫 せんせいは がっこうへ いらっしゃいます。 → The honored teacher goes to school.

Since いく already has a dedicated Sonkeigo verb, you must not convert it using the general pattern. This is why learning the special honorific verbs is important. Of course, you won’t know all of them at the beginning — and that’s fine. Most Japanese speakers will be pleasantly surprised that you’re trying to use respectful language at all, rather than being annoyed by a small mistake.

⚠️ Special care with suru‑verbs

For suru‑verbs, you use the verb stem instead of the masu‑form and attach になる or になります. However, you must also choose between two honorific prefixes: and .

お・ご + verb stem + になる
お・ご + verb stem + になります

🟨 Suru‑verbs with the ‑prefix

Plain Style masu‑Form Sonkeigo Form Meaning
そうじする そうじします おそうじになります to clean 🧹
れんしゅうする れんしゅうします おれんしゅうになります to practice 🏋️
あいさつする あいさつします おあいさつになります to greet 🙋

べんきょうする (to study) technically belongs here too, but in practice おべんきょうになります is not used. Instead, you use an alternative pattern:

verb stem + されます

This pattern works only for suru‑verbs. A more general version of this pattern will be covered in a later lesson.

Tip: Focus on the first pattern for now — it works for all verb types. Learn べんきょうされます as a special exception.

🟦 Suru‑verbs with the ‑prefix

Plain Style masu‑Form Sonkeigo Form Meaning
りょこうする りょこうします ごりょこうになります to travel ✈️
さっきょくする さっきょくします ごさっきょくになります to compose music 🎼
けいえいする けいえいします ごけいえいになります to manage, run a business 🏢
にゅうがくする にゅうがくします ごにゅうがくになります to enroll (in school) 🎓
うんてんする うんてんします ごうんてんになります to drive 🚗

So how do we know whether to use or ?

It depends on the word’s origin:

  • native Japanese words (kun‑yomi) tend to use
  • Sino‑Japanese words (on‑yomi) tend to use

Unfortunately, at N5 level you can’t reliably predict a word’s origin — so this rule isn’t very helpful yet.

On top of that, many everyday activities are treated as “Japanese enough” and simply take regardless of origin. This applies to all verbs in the ‑prefix table above.

Tip: For now, treat these suru‑verb honorific forms as additional vocabulary.

Note: From here on, I’ll use dictionary forms in formulas, but I’ll continue writing Keigo verbs in their masu‑forms.

📝 Fill‑in‑the‑blank exercise: お+stem+になる — respectful descriptions of actions

1️. せんせいは まいにち にほんごを ________。(べんきょうします)

2️. しゃちょうは かいぎで じぶんの いけんを ________。(いいます)

3️. おきゃくさまは しょくじを ゆっくり ________。(たべます)

4️. せんせいは まいにち 6じに おきて、ジョギングを ________。(します)

5️. ぶちょうは きょう としょかんで ほんを ________。(よみます)

6️. せんせいは きょう としょかんに ________。(いきます)

💬 Dialog

Markus has now learned how to use Sonkeigo even when no special honorific verb exists. Find all masu‑forms that can be replaced with a respectful form and insert the correct Sonkeigo expression.

🎬 Wrap‑up

You’ve now learned the pattern お・ご+stem+になる to turn a verb into its honorific form. For べんきょうします, however, you must use べんきょうされます. This exception comes from the second method of forming honorifics: using the passive form.

Passive formation, however, is taught starting at N4. With the tools available at N5, you can reliably use the dedicated honorific verbs and the pattern お・ご+stem+になる. And for now, that’s more than enough.

Here’s our updated decision guide:

  • I’m talking about someone else (e.g., a teacher, a client)
    • ✅ A special honorific verb exists → use it (e.g., いらっしゃる, ごらんになる)
    • ❌ No special honorific verb → use お・ご + verb stem + になる (e.g., おかえりになる, ごりようになる)
  • I’m talking about myself
    • masu‑form (desu–masu style)

🔜 In the next part, you’ll learn two elegant, high‑impact Keigo expressions you can already use with your N5 toolkit. They’re common, stylish, and impressive — no grammar gymnastics required.
